I wanted to become strong and kill the people who wronged me. I hoped that someday I would encounter my betrothed or the general of the army that killed me. I wanted to kill them with my own blade. But I've never seen them. Then slowly my rage died. Then a century later, it occurred to me that they both had to have been dead. Maybe someday I'll encounter them in Soul Society... or maybe they got eaten my hollows. Or maybe they're in hell. I don't know, but I don't care. I stopped caring all those years ago. At least my training wasn't useless. I joined the academy once I realized they had a use for a woman who knew how to swing a sword."

Kira put her hand on Saskia's knee, just touching her gently. "So you had a caretaker when you first arrived? That's good. Someone to help you. We all need that sometimes. Was your caretaker a good person?"

She hugged Kira tighter, her hand continuing to rub her stomach in wider circles. That was comfort.
